De Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden nodigt u van harte uit voor de lezing van dr. Elizabeth Savage, ‘Identifying Hans Baldung Grien’s Colour Printer: Johan Schott’.
“Art historians have long wondered how Hans Baldung Grien created multi-colour woodcuts in the 1510s. This paper breaks from precedent to ask who printed them. By doing so, it revises the attribution and dating of some of the best-known colour woodcuts from early modern Europe and, by extension, the history of colour printing techniques in the West.
Drawing on fields including Book History, Art History, Bibliography, and the history of printing techniques, it applies a new, printer-focused methodology to printed works of art to identify Johann Schott as the producer of Baldung’s colour woodcuts. By doing so, it revises the attribution and dating of some of the best-known colour woodcuts from early modern Europe. This research will be presented in the monographic exhibition ‘Hans Baldung Grien. Heilig | unheilig’, Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, in Winter 2019.”
De lezing vindt plaats op vrijdag 13 september om 16.00 uur in de Vossiuszaal – Universteitsbibliotheek Leiden,
Witte Singel 27, Leiden.
